The total sandwich market in the UK is worth approximately £3.5bn and is forecast to rise to £4.7bn by 2007. This dynamic growth is fuelled by changes in consumer lifestyles and work patterns. The key drivers are rising affluence, demand for speed and convenience (as a result of time pressures and shorter lunch breaks), and a growing interest in food quality and healthy eating.

37% of adults buy sandwiches every week. Whilst standard fillings such as cheese, ham, tuna and chicken account for 70% of sales, speciality breads and more exotic fillings provide new opportunities for growth.
